What is my core anyway?

When people begin learning about Pilates, one of the first things that comes to mind is the idea of the core. Many people ask, “Isn’t Pilates all about the core?” or say they want stronger “abs.” While core strength is essential for a healthy, functional body, the core is much more than an elusive six-pack or the act of pulling the belly button in tight. To move well and feel strong in everyday life, we need core awareness rather than constant tension. Understanding what the core really is helps us use our bodies more effectively in everything we do.

The core is not a single muscle but a system of muscles and fascial connections that work together to support the midsection. When an instructor cues you to “feel your abs” or “work your obliques,” they are referring to an orchestra of muscles coordinating to create a corset of strength around the torso. This system supports the spine when lifting, improves balance, and helps reduce excess tension in the neck and shoulders. Rather than being something we grip or hold, the core is meant to respond intelligently to movement.

At the center of this system are the diaphragm and the pelvic floor—two muscles many people don’t realize are deeply connected and the deepest part of the core!  They function together like a pump within the body, linked by fascia and designed to move in harmony. The diaphragm is a thin, dome-shaped muscle that sits at the base of the ribs, while the pelvic floor mirrors that dome at the bottom of the pelvis. When we inhale fully, both muscles gently descend to allow the ribs to expand. When we exhale, they lift together, creating intra-abdominal pressure that supports the spine. When this timing is working well, the deep abdominal muscles naturally respond without conscious effort.

In this way, the core functions reflexively. Everyone has some degree of core strength—otherwise we would not be able to stand or move at all. However, sedentary lifestyles, poor posture, and shallow breathing patterns can disrupt this natural coordination over time. When these patterns persist, the core becomes less responsive and less effective. Even Joseph Pilates understood the importance of breath long before modern exercise science confirmed it. As a child with asthma, he intuitively developed breathing techniques to improve lung function, laying the foundation for breath-centered movement work that remains essential to Pilates today.

Beyond the diaphragm and pelvic floor, the core includes muscles such as the transverse abdominis, the internal and external obliques, the rectus abdominis, and the deep muscles along the spine, including the multifidus and erectors. Together, these muscles form a supportive band around the torso. When alignment and breath are working well, they coordinate naturally to stabilize the body without excessive effort.

How much or how hard should you contract your core?  The answer is simple: more is not better—better is better. The amount of engagement needed depends on the task at hand. Sitting quietly requires very little support, while lifting a heavy object requires much more. Pilates trains the core to adapt to these changing demands. Constantly sucking in the stomach or pulling the belly button toward the spine can actually interfere with natural coordination and reduce support from the back muscles. Even exercises like planks, while effective, are best performed with quality and intention rather than excessive duration.

Posture also plays a significant role in how the core responds to load. In optimal alignment, the ears stack over the shoulders, the ribs float over the pelvis, and the body feels balanced rather than rigid. Over time, habitual postures can disrupt this alignment, making it difficult for the diaphragm and pelvic floor to work together effectively. Pilates helps restore this balance by guiding the body back into better alignment, layering in intentional breath, and progressively strengthening the stabilizing muscles.

When the core learns to stabilize and respond naturally, the benefits extend far beyond exercise. Movement feels easier and more confident. Everyday tasks require less effort and create less strain. Lifting, carrying, and reaching become safer and more efficient. Rather than thinking constantly about “engaging your core,” your body begins to support you automatically, allowing you to move through life with greater strength, ease, and resilience.
